Hoya Splash Varieties: A Collector's Guide (With Pictures)

Few things make a Hoya collector stop scrolling like a heavily splashed leaf. Those silver speckles can turn an ordinary green vine into the centrepiece of a plant shelf. In this guide we explain what splash is, how it differs from variegation, how to keep it strong — and we introduce some of the splash Hoyas we grow in Indonesia.

What is "splash" on a Hoya?

Splash is the silver to cream speckling you see on the leaves of many Hoyas. It is generally attributed to tiny air spaces just below the leaf surface that reflect light, which is why splash looks silvery and slightly shimmering rather than flat white.

Splash ranges from a light dusting of fine flecks to leaves that look almost completely frosted. Collectors often describe the heaviest forms as "silver" — for example Hoya 'Snow Cui' Silver or Hoya sigillatis 'Silver Moon'.

Splash vs. variegation — what's the difference?

The two terms are often mixed up, but they are not the same:

Splash Variegation
Looks like Silver or cream speckles and patches Clear cream, white, yellow or pink zones
Cause Reflective structure of the leaf surface Areas with little or no chlorophyll
Leaf underneath Still green Pale in the variegated areas
Typical names "Splash", "Silver" "Albomarginata" (pale edge), "Inner variegated" (pale centre), "Tricolor"

A plant can have both. Hoya pimenteliana Albomarginata, for example, combines a cream edge (albomarginata variegation) with silver splash across the green centre.

How to get more splash on your Hoya

  • Give it light. Splash is usually strongest in bright, indirect light, and many growers find a little gentle morning sun intensifies it. In low light, new leaves often come in greener.
  • Be patient with new growth. Splash is set as each leaf develops, so changes in light show up on the next leaves, not the existing ones.
  • Keep it healthy. A stressed, under-watered or root-bound-and-starving plant puts out smaller, duller leaves.

Splash Hoya care in short

  • Light: bright, indirect; more light = more splash
  • Water: let the mix dry partially between waterings
  • Mix: chunky and airy — orchid bark, perlite and coco chips
  • Humidity: 50%+ is ideal, especially for thinner-leaved types
